HUBba kabar? If you feel 2022 flew by quickly, you’re not alone! We agree!! It simply evaporated!
And what an unforgettable year it has been!! 2022 started on a positive note, riding on the tail-end of the pandemic as more of the global population got vaccinated. The Holiday Season of 2021 saw global travel numbers pick up again, back with a vengeance.
However, by February, everything changed abruptly with the Omicron Variant spreading around the world, halting the short-lived news of the subsiding pandemic and economic recovery.
If things couldn’t get worse, on 23 February, the world woke up to shocking news that Russia invaded neighboring Ukraine and declared war. What followed was an unraveling of compounded, globally-linked problems, triggered by oil and gas prices reaching record highs, pushing inflationary pressures everywhere. A War impacting millions of Ukrainians fleeing the country, causing the biggest humanitarian crisis in Europe since World War 2.
And then on to the death of Queen Elizabeth II on 8 Sep., Kanjuruhan Stadium Disaster that killed 135 in Malang (1 Oct.), E. Java; Itaewon Halloween Stampede that crushed 158 people in Seoul, S. Korea (29 Oct.); to the earthquakes in Afghanistan, in late June, that killed over 1,000 people; and in Cianjur, West Java on 1 November that killed 500.
And the energy crisis started in the EU, and spread across the world, pushing inflationary pressures globally. By Q3, inflationary pressures were felt around the world, energy crisis hit Europe with Russia stopping gas exports.
2022 saw Government Leadership crises around the world. Probably none as dramatic as the UK’s. A tough year for the former EU member that saw 3 Prime Ministers (PM) in less than 6 months. Boris Johnson resigned in July, replaced by Liz Truss in September – who then resigned in October after only 7 weeks – becoming the shortest-serving British PM ever. Then succeeded by Rishi Sunak, former Finance Minister under Johnson.
Domestically, Indonesians have been glued to their TVs since July 2022, following the scandalous Sambo – Yosua murder trial. General Ferdy Sambo, the former Inspector General and Head of Internal Affairs at the Indonesian National Police.
Police had initially said the bodyguard, 27-year-old brigadier Yosua Hutabarat, was killed in a shootout with another officer at Sambo’s Jakarta residence on 8 July, however, this turned out to be a cover-up. Opening up Pandora’s box on a corrupted Police, and their involvement in the illicit drug trade, online gambling, prostitution, and money laundering.
Thankfully 2022 wasn’t all doom and gloom. The year also saw Indonesia host the G20 holding Presidency of the prestigious global club for the first time. And hosted various important meetings throughout 2022, culminating with G20 Meeting for 20 Heads of State in Bali, in November. Countries came together to take action toward achieving the world’s collective climate goals as agreed under the Paris Agreement and the Convention.
And what better way to close the year, than with FIFA World Cup, the world’s most popular sport, soccer, that saw Argentina bring home the World Cup after beating France 4-2 in Qatar on 18 December.
How do we navigate through a world full of disruptions, uncertainty, upheaval, and natural calamity? We just do. We learn to live through it. Just like we’ve proven in 2022.
So how do you stay focused on positive impact against all the negativity we’ve seen in 2022? We use the following ingredients; a. We stay positive; b. We stay connected with our Communities and Impact Hub Families from our global network; and 3. We collaborate our way out of any challenge.
As we close 2022, we do so with the right intention, entering 2023 with new hope and energy to do better, go farther, and connect with more communities who share the same mission of doing good. This is the only way to survive and grow our business.
